Elefsina Old Oil Mill Factory

Elefsina Old Oil Mill Factory
Cultural Centre Buildings
The project included 3 existing buildings dating from early 1900s – part of an abandoned industrial complex, in order to host a new cultural centre.
The buildings were of mixed structural type (stone masonry – reinforced concrete – timber roof), yet there were significant damages due to lack of maintenance and seismic events.
A thorough mapping of all the damages was created and a detail repair strategy and methodologies were developed in collaboration with the contractor.
Subsequently, strengthening of the structural elements was designed, based on the contemporary codes.
The design philosophy of our practice approached this project respecting the original building technology – thus tried to minimize any interventions and designate the materials once used.
Key Points of the project:
- Masonry repairs with grout injection
- Concrete jacketing
- Shotcrete strengthening
- FRPs strengthening
- Steelwork elements
